The guest bedrooms are divided into five categories (cozy, small, medium, big, and big accessible), and each features 1960s-inspired décor and furniture, aged wood floors, and woven tapestries. Rich velvet or boucle upholstery, burl wood side tables, and ceramic bedside lamps accentuate the beds. The most noteworthy design features in the bathrooms are the beautiful handblown vanity lights and mosaic stone floors. Each bedroom features 1960s-inspired furniture, aged wooden floors, and woven tapestries made with fabric custom designed in Southern California. Beds are upholstered with lush velvet or boucle, and accompanied by burl wood side tables and ceramic bedside lamps.

The Jonathan Beach Club

Spread over four floors and a rooftop, the club was envisioned by the company's in-house design team, with nods to the bright block colours and strong geometric shapes of LA's mid-century art scene. After a two-year price freeze during the COVID-19 pandemic, Soho House raised its “Every House” annual membership to $4,000 in February, a double-digit percentage increase to help it manage inflation. (Members younger than 27 — about a fifth of its base — get half off all three membership categories, a common practice among social clubs looking to cultivate a more youthful vibe.) Annual retention has nonetheless held steady at about 95%, the company said. Few cities are cooler, edgier or more creative than Los Angeles, and nowhere embodies this spirit more than West Hollywood. It is no coincidence, then, that Soho House, the private members’ club favored by media and entertainment types, has opened a second house here. And because Jones loves food (and likely also because the food and alcohol sold at restaurants and in clubs generate revenue), Soho House is also focusing on improving the dining options for members.

“Sites come my way and our way, and we search around and work out whether it's the right location,” Jones explains. Although Soho House restaurants are concentrated in the U.K., like the clubs, they are decidedly international (the Allis, a lounge and bar named after industrialist and philanthropist Charles Allis, only has locations in Istanbul and Chicago, for example). In 2012, billionaire Ron Burkle bought a majority stake in the the Soho House Group and helped finance its international expansion.

In 2016, Jones made it possible to shop these design elements with Soho Home, an e-commerce site. Now even nonmember plebes can buy the $700 pink leather footstools and $38 crystal Champagne coupes that provide the certain something that makes Soho House the perfect place for creative types to Network and Chill. Here’s how it got started, and everything else you should know about the most famous exclusive club there is. The club’s facilities include a pool; basketball, handball, and squash courts; and boutique hotel rooms. Famous members include Charlie Chaplin, Colonel James B. Lankershim, and Esther Williams. Younger than the exclusive Jonathan and California clubs, the City Club (51 stories up!) has a fairly loose policy about jeans-wearing and once proudly described itself as “a little United Nations.” It also offers discounts for members under 30.

Founded by Alphonzo Edward Bell Sr. (the namesake of Bel Air, and developer of both the Bay Club and the Bel Air Country Club), this club officially opened in 1927. Raymond Chandler supposedly hammered out his classic Farewell, My Lovely here; he used it as inspiration for the Belvedere Beach Club in the novel. Founded in 1921, this club is connected to a worldwide network of adventurous fellows that has carried on the traditions of the first group of “soldiers, sailors, hunters, trappers, travelers, journalists, authors and scientists” who started the group. A launch party for SHO Club last month began with a hard-hat walk-through of the construction zone, with a stop inside the cavernous space that will house SHO Restaurant. “We’re not suggesting that an exclusive membership can’t coexist with humility. “In order to deliver a certain level of service and a certain level of experience, and to create a tight-knit group, there is a function of scale and numbers that you do need to be mindful of. Demand has never been higher for Soho House, which opened its first location in London in 1995 and has grown to more than three dozen houses around the world — 20 of them since the beginning of 2018 — as well as co-working-only hubs and an interior decor retail brand. To keep the clubs young and, thus, hip, members under 27 get a 50 percent discount on the annual membership until they turn 30. Those who live in select Soho House-approved cities without an actual Soho House, like Aspen, Milan, and Tokyo, can purchase an every-club membership for $2,500.

Opened in 2010, the West Hollywood “house” of the London-based chain has been so successful, it’s planning to open a second LA location in the Arts District (though it’s a bit behind schedule). Established as a social club in 1895, the Jonathan Club spent a lot of time combating its long and stuffy history. It underwent a hip makeover in 2013 and relaxed its dress code in the hope of attracting a younger crowd.

Located in the arts district of Downtown LA, Soho Warehouse began as an industrial building and recording studio. This location is the only one in LA that houses a roof-top swimming pool. Other amenities include a sitting room for connecting and working, the Mandolin Taverna restaurant and bar, and drawing room for events and workshops. The artsy environment and curated space allows for people to admire views and work with inspiration. The club space features 1960s-inspired mint terrazzo floors, dark wood paneling and bespoke furniture.

Access to the beach club costs a little bit more, but it’s probably worth it. The Club space on the ground floor features mint-green terrazzo floors accompanied by bespoke furniture upholstered in neutral-toned velvet and patterned fabrics. Founding members of Water (377 people) will pay $15,000 to join, and founding members of Earth (2,878 people) will pay $7,500. They’ll get 24/7 concierge services, access to online and in-person events, and members-only perks at the club’s forthcoming SHO Restaurant, among them priority reservations and a separate menu. But exclusivity is “inherent right in the model” of members-only clubs, said Kevin O’Shea, co-founder of the month-old Aster on Vine Street.

For an additional fee, some Soho Houses also grant children access to club facilities. Members can choose to join just their local Soho House or opt in to access at Soho Houses around the world. To join the tribe of “like-minded individuals” that is Soho House, applicants must provide a recent headshot, a one-time application fee, and, of course, an accounting of their career and interests.

In London, Soho House has a standalone diner (Electric Diner) and a French brasserie (High Road Brasserie), among others. There have been restaurant chains serving pizza (Pizza East), burgers (Dirty Burger), and rotisserie chicken (Chicken Shop). Some of the Soho House restaurants, like Venice-born Cecconi’s, were existing restaurants that Soho House took over, but others were expressly designed to feed the urban, creative class Soho House serves.

He argued that the way to balance that out was through lower barriers to entry and more relaxed house rules. The company reported last month that Soho House grew to 142,250 members in the second quarter, an 8.7% increase from the first quarter and a 27% increase year over year. Its waitlist across all brands now stands at more than 81,500 people, an all-time high. And if you need some privacy, you can step into the library that boasts floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and seating arranged with live performances and special events in mind.

An extension of the club space, the light-filled atrium with the bar at its heart is an outdoor space for eating and drinking. The mint terrazzo flooring and table top seating run seamlessly through the indoor and outdoor spaces, warmed up with golden textured fabrics to complement the shades of green around the bar. The library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and comfy seating, is designed also to host live entertainment, members’ events, and performances. This house is IMPRESSIVE, with its amazing interior design, 20 floors and 360 views of Los Angeles. This location has has many members, amazing food options, lounge/meeting areas and event space. He only does this with a few restaurants and chefs in the world, so consider this location lucky.

After a lull in 2020, when many private clubs temporarily or permanently shut down and plans to launch new ones were postponed, club owners are pushing ahead to take advantage of remote-work policies and pent-up demand to hang out and spend money doing it. Now there’s an influx of newcomers rolling out in the trendiest corners of town, with grand openings every few weeks. None of that has deterred the droves of hopefuls vying for spots in the new class of members-only clubs. Nor, so far, has a slumping stock market and an economy flirting with recession. The secretive hideaways, already on the rise, became even more sought after during the pandemic with their promise of a full-lifestyle day-to-night experience combining co-working and socializing under one stylish roof (or on top of it). That they’re meant for only a handpicked few has, for some, added to the allure.

Several custom-made pieces by painter Jessalyn Brooks, Sayre Gomez, and Diedrick Brackens are also displayed throughout this West Hollywood outpost. Holloway House is accessible to Soho House members through every house or local memberships. Bedrooms can be booked by Soho House members and Soho Friends and are also open to the public. Soho Friends is a new membership format that provides access to Soho House bedrooms, Studios, and benefits in other Soho House spaces. The collection at Holloway House brings together a collection of artists, all 40 and under, and born, based or trained in LA.

But don’t try to take a photo of anything, because Soho House Weho and a no camera policy. This club taking over the former Redbury Hotel in Hollywood is a transplant from England. The club aimed at creatives will include a traditional English tea room, a rooftop restaurant, a pool, a co-working space, and 36 hotel-style bedrooms available to both club members and the public. It’s planned to open in early 2019, a representative for the club tells Curbed. The Soho House portfolio now includes more than a dozen different restaurants, many with multiple locations in cities with a Soho House club.
